December 7, 2011 "How to Increase Participation, Engagement, and Commitment from Group Participants" with Anne Neal (Collaborative Connections, Inc.)

Anne Neal

How to Increase Participation, Engagement, and Commitment from Group Participants

This meeting will be focused on improving group facilitation skills and outcomes.  Some of the biggest complaints when facilitating meetings for groups are that people don’t join in, don’t care enough, and don’t follow-through.  Why is this?  And what can we do about it?  We’ll find answers by developing a ToP 10 list of barriers to participation.  Then we’ll design facilitation strategies to overcome each one.  We’ll also discuss ways to engender commitment from participants.  Anne Neal will demonstrate an effective facilitation methodology throughout the meeting that you’ll be able to use in your facilitation events.

Speaker’s Bio: Anne Neal has been in the human development field for the past seventeen years with a life-time emphasis on professional and personal growth.  Anne is an experienced facilitator, trainer, and executive coach and has worked with a wide variety of groups.  She uses a number of participatory facilitation methodologies in her strategic planning work and trains others to use these same skills and methods.  Anne is best known for her energetic commitment to people achieving their highest visions.

ASTD Certificate Offerings in Denver in  October

October 19-21, 2011

Human Performance Improvement in the Workplace"

Denver, Colorado

ASTD HPI Certificate Workshop

Learn the three primary principles that underlie HPI. Understand how contributors from such disciplines as behaviorism, management sciences, organization development, and systems theory have created a systematic approach to solving organizational problems. See how the HPI model unites these principles under a common process.

The HPI process helps you get your clients to articulate their business goals, link these goals to human performance, diagnose the current state of performance in the organization, find the root causes for performance deficiencies, implement solutions, and evaluate the results of the solutions. During the course, you will also experience what it feels like to do performance consulting, what it takes to manage the change that accompanies solutions, and whether you have the core skills it takes to be a performance consultant.

Too many of us build learning solutions, hope learners come and then move on to the next project. In today’s economy, with budgets more scrutinized than ever, we cannot afford to simply produce great learning materials. Even the best learning initiatives have no impact if nobody knows about them. For our learning to have impact, we need to grab attention, generate interest and get the learner to take action. We need to become great learning promoters.

This discussion will look at tips to grab attention, generate interest and get your learners to take action. Additionally, the discussion will explore social media and how IBM Training is using this channel to promote learning offerings, through YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and RSS

October 7, 2011 “I have the answer for you … If you have the right question” with Kevin Shrum

Kevin Shrum

Many trainers, educators, OD practitioners, performance improvement specialists, and organizational consultants experience a common occurrence – a client or customer comes to the practitioner with the problem diagnosed and a corrective action already in mind.

While it may seem to be good customer service to simply meet the client’s request, it may not always be in the client’s best interest!

This presentation will use a case study examination to discover why “off the shelf” or even customized training-oriented interventions can fail to live up to expectations, and will offer ideas on how to perform a more accurate diagnosis and create a more effective intervention plan.

The concepts can help a consultant improve client satisfaction, and can help an in-house trainer to escape from the “just a trainer” box and move into the realm of OD practitioner, internal performance improvement consultant, and all-around problem-solver and “go to” person.

October 14, 2010 Don’t Be Boring!! Converting ILT to WBT with Sue Fody

Oh no!  The travel budget is slashed and the directive is to deliver your class over the web. Now what? Have you taken webinars that have been so dreadfully boring that you’ve spent the time listening with one ear and checking e-mails instead of learning?

During this session we will look at ways to convert instructor-led designs to web delivered designs so your learners will engage, participate and learn!  We’ll look at webinar applications at the generic level and discuss the features that allow the trainer to engage learners almost as actively as if they were in the classroom. Expect to come out with a list of tips and techniques that will help you transition a course to web delivery.  Bring your dreadful stories as well…we’ll want to examine how not to be a boring web trainer.

“Can You Envision Better Information Retention?” with Kevin Shum

Although many trainers, educators, and presenters might prefer to spend most their time operating at the higher levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy or Gagne’s Hierarchy by focusing on understanding and application, it is undeniable that we usually can’t reach those levels without a foundation of knowledge transfer of “facts.”  Many times, that foundation requires committing those facts to memory, sometimes in a rote fashion.  Especially in a corporate training environment, it is often crucial for employees to be able to remember key concepts without the need for reference materials to perform their duties.

We therefore often wrestle with the problem of presenting information which requires rote memory in an engaging style with potentially good retention – we don’t want the presentation to remind our attendees of sitting in a classroom reciting the multiplication tables.

This presentation will focus specifically on an interactive demonstration of two very effective techniques for improving retention of key information.  Program attendees will experience first-hand the WOW factor of discovering, “I memorized that and I didn’t even know I was learning it!”  Attendees will also work with colleagues in identifying and discussing ways to customize the techniques to the individual needs and purposes of those attending. We must change the way we teach! Students sitting numb, with the “expert” up front, is no longer relevant, and it's no longer working! Learn ways to use today's tech tools to engage the learners BEFORE they ever walked into the classroom. Get learners actively participating and learning through simple game-like strategies and have them wanting to learn MORE. Extend your learner’s experience by offering fun tech-nuggets that allow them to continue sharing and learning far beyond a day of training.

In this action packed session you will discover ways to use today’s popular tech tools like Augmented Reality, Flip video cameras, Blogs, YouTube, even virtual worlds like Second Life to create game-like learning in ANY program. These ideas are easy to implement and most cost NOTHING to add into your next learning event. Click here for Gina's expanded bio.

Added bonus: We will give away a FREE PASS to the certificate program of your choice (including the three above) to an NRC member in attendance on August 19th (pass valid until Dec 31 2010). That makes your odds pretty good!!

“I have the answer for you … IF you have the right question” with Kevin Shrum

Many trainers, educators, OD practitioners, performance improvement specialists, and organizational consultants experience a common occurrence – a client or customer comes to the practitioner with the problem diagnosed and a corrective action already in mind, and that corrective action may be based on the client’s knowledge of the trainer’s catalog of training events or the consultant’s menu of services.

While it may seem to be good customer service to simply meet the client’s request, it may not always be in the client’s best interest!

This presentation will use a case study examination to discover why performance interventions can fail to live up to expectations, and will offer ideas on how to use the Kirkpatrick “Levels of Evaluation” model in reverse to perform a more accurate diagnosis and create a more effective intervention plan.  The concepts can help a consultant improve client satisfaction, and can help an in-house trainer to escape from the “just a trainer” box and move into the realm of internal performance improvement consultant and problem-solver.

May 12, 2010 "How to fix" your boss when you can't afford to leave, and your employees when you can't afford to lose them!  with Christie Ward, CSP

In the workplace today, people are stressed to the max and sabotage is the norm. Getting credit for your work, his work and her work is the new goal. Why? Protecting turf and looking good are standard operating procedure. So how do you lead with grace, care about people, and not get run over? How do you stay authentic and be yourself in all this? How does your style WORK in today's environment? And how on earth can you fix those people who really need fixing?

As workplace learning professionals, we are called on to "fix" teams, managers, conflicts and attitudes all the time! Come for some tools to make this a little easier. You'll actually experience some tools in this session, through lively discussion, video clips, and your own reflection. You'll leave with a profile code to go online and receive a $75 assessment FREE. One code per paid attendee only, please. These tools could make the difference for you in your job and anywhere those human interactions are really annoying!

Objectives for our session together:
1) Simplify how to motivate and influence people, particularly those you have trouble with
2) Get actual verbiage to help you "get buy in" from your boss, or that client you're trying to win over
3) Hone your tone and your questioning skills to take your "appreciative inquiry" to the next level

April 21, 2010 Evaluating Training Programs: The Four Levels and Managing Change

This program has been approved for 4.5 (General ) recertification credit hours toward PHR, SPHR and GPHR recertification through the HR Certification Institute.

Meet Don Kirkpatrick, a legend in the training industry who invented the four levels of evaluation - the most widely used evaluation model for decades. In the morning session Don will explore how training should be planned, executed and measured to deliver its intended impact on results. He will focus not just on how to measure results after the training is completed, but how training needs to be planned with the end results in mind and then appropriately reinforced if it is to deliver value. After lunch Don will address managing change and share his insights on what is required to get the desired change in behavior. Hear it all from the master, himself, and ask him your questions about applying the concepts to your real-world work situation.
