Monthly Newsletter :: March 2009

Moving Forward

You may have noticed that your newsletter is now coming from a new address. We have contracted with The Meeting Edge, a service provider to associations, to help us with a variety of back office work including publishing our monthly newsletter. A high priority goal for us this year is to put up and maintain a more comprehensive, informative and easier to use web site. The Meeting Edge will help us do this over the next several months. In the meantime, please be patient if you cannot register/pay for an event on the old site. You may have to go “old school” and RSVP Dave Vance and pay in person for the next two programs.

Please take a look at the “Past President’s Corner” in this issue. Sue Fody was President of our chapter from 2004 to 2007 and shares her experiences and what it meant to her.

Also, take a look at our programs through June and get them on your calendar early. We are especially excited about the networking event at Biaggis on June 3rd from 5-7 pm cosponsored by NCCA and NCHRA. It will be a great opportunity to learn more about the other organizations, hear about their upcoming programs, and meet new interesting people. No charge for admission, but you must register.

Networking Event for ASTD-NRC, NCCA and NCHRA

Join us for a very special networking event cosponsored by ASTD NRC, NCCA (Northern Colorado Coaches Alliance) and NCHRA (Northern Colorado Human Resource Association). This is your chance to learn more about each of these organizations, enhance your referral and network base, and of course, meet other interesting people.

Like ASTD NRC, both NCCA and NCHRA are dedicated to human development in general, and to the professional development of their members in particular. A representative from each group will speak for five minutes followed by 15-20 minutes of structured networking. The remainder of the time will be unstructured. Each group will have literature available including a calendar of their upcoming programs for the next three-four months.

Memberships, books or other prizes will be given away towards the end of the event. There is NO CHARGE for attending but you must register in advance through one of the three organizations. Hors d’oeuvres and soft drinks will be served (other drinks available for purchase from the bar). We anticipate 50- 70 attendees. Non members are welcome.

Reflections from a Past President

I drove around the block several times, telling myself to just go in even though I knew not a soul. So I walked with apprehension into my first ASTD meeting, into a small and narrow restaurant room. It was dark, noisy from the clanking of silverware and bar glasses. Inside I was met by a welcoming group of people.

At that time the Northern Rockies Chapter was run by two people for… I don’t know how long. But shortly after my introduction to this very friendly group, new volunteers stepped up to the plate and the contents of “the file box” was distributed. One of the two retiring leaders focused on his business. The other rode off into the sunset on a motorcycle never to be heard from again.

That was when my journey of leadership began - first as Membership Chair, then as Chapter President in 2004 to serve a term which evolved into a three plus year adventure. As an organization, we grew and changed over the years. We were a “pay-check-to pay-check” organization, hoping the dues from the previous meeting would cover the expenses for the next meeting. But we always had members and a variety of topical and interesting presentations. Relationships were built. Ideas were shared. We moved out of the dark narrow meeting room to a variety of other places. Would members come for lunch or would they prefer dinner meetings? ASTD National grew too, and standards were implemented for chapters. We aimed for and reached those standards, and to date we are still, proudly, a CORE compliant chapter.

In 2007 a little magic happened. A few of us attended 2006 ALC – the conference for chapter leaders. As always, we networked and exchanged ideas. The idea to bring the Disney organization to Northern Colorado fell into our laps and we decided to take the risk as the second chapter in the nation to try this strategy. A hardworking core group of people accomplished amazing things and the Disney Institute came to Northern Colorado, attracting over 250 attendees. The fruits of our labor put thousands of dollars into our bank, even after thousands of dollars of expenses. Exhausted and happy, we strove to reinvest those dollars to bring quality events to our members and the community.

Today we are an organization still striving to meet the needs of changing times. There are still those stories of the days of yore when hoards of trainers belonging to local corporations all joined ASTD. Times always change. Today we are reaching out to form partnerships with other organizations with similar desires.

ASTD is an organization that is home for those with a passion for learning and performance improvement. ASTD is a place to meet with people of like minds, exchange ideas, form relationships, and help others learn. As a corporate instructional designer and trainer, leading the chapter expanded my professional world. People and programs helped propagate ideas, my network exploded, opportunities arose to be active regionally and nationally with ASTD. I helped and was helped. The ties I created helped me through four layoffs over the years, and relationships and opportunities continue to bloom.

The values of staying active in the chapter as a member or volunteer are numerous and all good. Network. Learn. Attend programs. Develop skills you may not have the opportunity to use at work. Enhance your professional credibility and image (on your resume, too!). Get out of your comfort zone. Keep learning. Stay current with industry trends. Bring new ideas to work. Our profession is changing. As part of the learning community we need each other.
