Welcome to the
September Newsletter!
We hope you will spend a few minutes checking out the upcoming programs
which are planned through December so you can calendar them well in
advance. Notice a few things in particular
• In September we have an evening program with Sam Lloyd
cosponsored with the NCCA. The topic is very timely: Maintaining Morale
and Productivity in Tough Times. Register now!
• The October program is a half-day workshop at the Embassy Suites
with Michelle Cummings who presented to us in March (You said, “Bring
her back!”)
Also, our new web site is up and running!!!! Check it out at
astd-nrc.org. We hope you like the look and feel, and find it both
helpful and easy to use. You can find a complete listing of all our
programs plus information on membership, our 2009 Goals and the Mid-Year
Report to members, and contact information for the board members. This
fall we plan to start work on a “members only” section which will
contain a directory of members (who opt in), past program presentations,
and more. If you would like to help, please contact Kim Pichot or Dave
Vance.
New members over the summer include Diane Campbell, Ava Diamond, Sharon
Roberts-Meyers, Pam Kurtz, Celeste DiIorio, Patricia Eichorn, Bill
Shirley, Ann Winslow, Sara Colorosa, Pam Smith, Kristen Coffel, Keith
Sathe, Rebecca Wallace and Melissa Powell. Welcome! We look forward to
getting to know you.
Renewing members include Mary Schneider, Doreen Warrender, Patsi Maroney,
Angie Koponen, Diana McKinney, Andrea DiMatteo and Dan Chenoweth. Thank
you for renewing! We appreciate your continuing support.
And speaking of membership, see Kim Pichot’s (VP for Membership) article
this month on the value of local membership. If you are not member,
please consider the value provided by joining the chapter. If you
already are a member, please help us spread the word.

Maintaining Morale and Productivity in Tough
Times
When the news is filled with stories of layoffs, high
unemployment, financial crises around the world and in our own state and
communities, organizations of all types are faced with the challenge of
keeping morale and productivity high! This program will give you many
ideas, tools and techniques to use within your organization to achieve
that goal. You will learn how to help others handle the anxiety,
uncertainty, and pressure caused by the difficult times we are in. Sam
is the author of six books including Leading Teams: Skills for
Success, Coaching Skills for Leaders, Developing Positive Assertiveness

Chapter ASTD
Membership: An Excellent Career Network
Last month we featured an article that described the benefits of
national membership. And now you may be wondering “What is the
difference between national and chapter membership“? Chapter
membership helps you get involved in your professional development
at the local level. As social beings we have a need to interact with
others. Interacting with people from the same professional
background opens up a whole new dimension of professional growth for
us.
The Northern Rockies Chapter is a group of learning and development
professionals who actively support and learn from each other. Our
active membership is over 70 members strong with a wider network of
over 200 contacts. It provides growth opportunities for anyone
interested in workplace learning and performance. If you’ve been to
one of our meetings, you know that we are a friendly group who
enjoys networking while learning.
One of the greatest benefits I have found in joining our chapter has
been networking with other professionals. Especially in today’s
economy, there is great value in being connected to others who may
be experiencing similar difficulties or situations. How inspiring it
is to connect with someone from another organization and discuss the
trends in the area. Or say you’re new to the field and feel rather
alone? Look no further, you have a group of people willing to share
with you, answer your questions, or point you in the right
direction. Maybe you’re looking for an area expert who can help you
brainstorm or find resources. You may just find that person at your
chapter meeting!
The Northern Rockies Chapter meets on a monthly basis to provide you
with the opportunity to network and also to learn. The speakers at
our meetings are subject experts, and most of them are local to our
area. As you listen to a variety of presentations, you gain new
insights, get to know experts who are here locally, and continue
your professional growth. On the other hand, we are always looking
for someone new to present a topic to the group and welcome the
opportunity to learn from your expertise.
On an annual basis, we conduct a survey of our chapter members with
the intent of listening to your needs, understanding the direction
you would like us to take, and taking positive action to always
serve our members. As a result, we are working on creating a
members’ only online directory that will feature your areas of
expertise, your interests, and a means for other members to more
easily find you and network with you. Over the next couple of
months, you will be receiving a phone call asking you for
information that you may want to share. This is a perfect
opportunity to actively grow your personal network and give us
direct feedback to what would most benefit you directly.
Last, membership can save you money. It is only $50 per year which
entitles you to discounted program fees. Typically, you will save
$10 on each monthly program and $20-$40 on half or full-day
workshops.
