Welcome to the November 2010 Newsletter!

Be sure to calendar our Networking after Hours event for December 7th in Fort Collins from 5-7. No speaker, just an informal time to get together with friends before the holiday season gears up. And, for those of you who missed Ava Diamond in August 2009, she will do a repeat performance of Is Your But Too Big? in Cheyenne at LCCC on December 3rd.

New members include Barbara Trowbridge (Johnstown), Simon Lawler (Fort Collins, Otterbox), Aleesa Whiteis (Fort Collins, Mary Kay), and Demi Cross (Cheyenne, Cross Ranch). Welcome! We look forward to getting to know you.

Renewing members this month include Sue Fody (Loveland, The Trizetto Group), Andrea DiMatteo (Fort Collins, New Belgium Brewing), and Eileen McCluskey (Greeley, High Plains Library District). Thank you for renewing! We appreciate your continuing support.

This week in the President’s Corner you can read about the results of our fall survey. Thanks to the 36 of you who contributed and to Robbi Lynn, VP of Programs, for organizing it and writing up the results!! We value your input and will use it at our upcoming annual planning meeting to decide on programs, direction, and priorities for next year. Aleesa Whiteis was the winner of the drawing for a free annual membership for completing the survey. Congratulations Aleesa!

Speaking of planning for 2011 and beyond, we invite you to join us for our annual planning session on December 13th from 4-8 pm at Dave Vance’s house in Windsor. Just let him know if you would like to attend (jansunsnow@aol.com).

If it is budget time in your organization and if the budget allows, now is the time to make a pitch for including some funds for 1) ASTD national membership (only $199), and 2) to attend the ASTD TechKnowledge Conference (February 2-4 in San Jose) or ASTD International Conference and Exposition (May 22-25 in Orlando). Also, it is likely more certificate programs will be held in Denver like those we had in August and September. And if none of these is possible, keep in mind that the ASTD International Conference will be held in Denver in 2012!

2010 Program Survey Results and the Tentative Plan for 2011 Programs

Each year we seek your input to guide our program planning for the coming year. Our goal is to provide interesting professional programs that meet your needs, and there is no better way to discover your needs than by asking.

Thirty six of you completed our program survey administered online in October.  We used this input as well as the level 1 evaluations completed for each program and past attendance to plan our programs for 2011.

Following is a brief summary of the survey results:

  • Most respondents have worked in the field 11-20 years which was a large shift from last year’s survey where the majority were in the 0-5 years area.
  • A large majority of the respondents work for Companies, Government, or Organizations.
  • There was a wide response to presentations you would like to see. The top six choices were Instructional Design, Facilitating Organizational Change, Coaching, Facilitation, Training Technologies, and Accelerated Learning
  • A large majority preferred lunch meetings, followed by breakfast, then a few dinner votes.  There were also some comments in the “magic wand” responses to indicate a virtual event would be useful so we will schedule at least 1 meeting as a virtual program.
  • 100% indicated that the 3 event communications (starting with 45 days out plus the newsletter) was often enough.
  • As far as the newsletter content, 94% found it valuable and there were several comments on how we can make it more valuable which will be reviewed by the Board of Directors.
  • When it comes to the reason members joined our ASTD chapter a large majority were split between professional development and networking/connecting with others in the field.

Based on this feedback, the board will consider the following program strategy at our December 13th annual planning meeting:

1.       Continue to provide networking opportunities since is one of the primary reasons people become members. At least 3 meetings will be dedicated to networking.

2.       Schedule most meetings at lunch time, followed by breakfast, and possibly 1 dinner / after hours meeting.

3.       Focus on the highest demand program preferences as speakers are available.

Your feedback and the resulting programming strategy are reflected in our tentative 2011 calendar below:

  • January 20:  Five Powerful Principles of Leadership Coaching, Carl Dierschow – Possibility Partnership
  • February 16:  Workplace Competency Model, Angie Maze - Jones International University
