Welcome to the May
2010 Newsletter!
We had a great workshop with Don Kirkpatrick on April 21 at the Embassy
Suites in Loveland. More than 80 attended. For those who could not make
it, be sure to look for his session at any conference you attend. It is
well worth it!
There is still time to register for our May 12th program with Christie
Ward on “How to Fix Your Boss When You Can’t Afford to Leave and Your
Employees When You Can’t Afford to Lose Them.” Great title and it
promises to be a excellent program. See below for more.
Mark your calendar for our June program “I have the answer for you…IF
you have the right question” with Kevin Shrum. This will be a great
follow up to Don Kirkpatricks’s presentation. Kevin is Professor of
Organizational Leadership at Regis University and is on our NRC Board.
We have two new VPs on our board. Susan Keehley is our new VP for the
Cheyenne programs who just arrived in Cheyenne from Las Vegas. And Robbi
Muniz is our new VP for Programs. Both bring lots of energy and new
ideas, and we are fortunate to have them. Welcome!
New members include Amy Aleman, Shelly Grice, Robbi Muniz, Denise
Bachard, Teresa Morey, Jennifer Ayers, Sasha Landrigan, Katie Diel,
Janice Schofield, Stacey Dreher, Darrell Spinler, Katie Gray, Alicia
Woll, Chris Briest, Jen Vasquez and Cody Kneipp. Welcome! We look
forward to getting to know you.
Renewing members include Marie Ziminoff, Clarisa Harris, Lisa Keeton,
Annette Thomas and Kathy Flowers. Thank you for renewing! We appreciate
your continuing support.
This month Bob McDonnell shares his thoughts on social networking with
us in the President’s Corner. Check it out and learn about our facebook
presence.
CPLP Study Group Forming!
We are forming a study group for ASTD’s new accreditation which is the
Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP). This is the
FIRST accreditation offered for workplace learning and performance
professionals. Soon you will begin to see “CPLP Preferred” on job
notices and having the CPLP certification will enhance both your
professional stature and your marketability.
The CPLP accreditation is a two-step process. First, you must study for
and then pass a test to demonstrate your proficiency in nine areas of
expertise. Examples of areas are designing learning and managing the
learning function. Then you must complete and submit a work product
demonstrating practical mastery. Both are administered by ASTD
Certification Institute. Since the accreditation is intended to be
meaningful and signify real mastery in our field, the process is
rigorous. This means you must prepare for the test – very few can pass
it without preparation.
Thus the desire to start a study group which would be beneficial not
just for those who want to take the test but for anyone who wants to
work with their peers to improve their knowledge and increase their
proficiency. So, we encourage you to consider CPLP preparation whether
you intend to sit for the test or not.
We will have more information available at each of our meetings. The
chapter has the ASTD Learning System which is a 10 volume, 1200 page
product written to convey the knowledge in the nine areas of expertise
necessary to pass the test. The ASTD Learning System will be available
to the Study Group.
If you are interested in joining the group, please contact Paul Smith at
paul.smith.ftcollins@comcast.net. You must be a chapter
member to join the group.

"How to fix"
™
your boss when you can't afford to leave, and your employees when you
can't afford to lose them!
with Christie Ward, CSP |
|

|
In the workplace today, people are stressed
to the max and sabotage is the norm. Getting credit for your work, his
work and her work is the new goal. Why? Protecting turf and looking good
are standard operating procedure. So how do you lead with grace, care
about people, and not get run over? How do you stay authentic and be
yourself in all this? How does your style WORK in today's environment?
And how on earth can you fix those people who really need fixing?
As workplace learning professionals, we are called on to "fix" teams,
managers, conflicts and attitudes all the time! Come for some tools to
make this a little easier. You'll actually experience some tools in this
session, through lively discussion, video clips, and your own
reflection. You'll leave with a profile code to go online and receive a
$75 assessment FREE. One code per paid attendee only, please. These
tools could make the difference for you in your job and anywhere those
human interactions are really annoying!
Objectives for our session together:
1) Simplify how to motivate and influence people, particularly those you
have trouble with
2) Get actual verbiage to help you "get buy in" from your boss, or that
client you're trying to win over
3) Hone your tone and your questioning skills to take your "appreciative
inquiry" to the next level

“I
have the answer for you … IF you have the right question” with Kevin
Shrum |
|

|
Many trainers, educators, OD practitioners, performance improvement
specialists, and organizational consultants experience a common
occurrence – a client or customer comes to the practitioner with the
problem diagnosed and a corrective action already in mind, and that
corrective action may be based on the client’s knowledge of the
trainer’s catalog of training events or the consultant’s menu of
services.
While it may seem to be good customer service to simply meet the
client’s request, it may not always be in the client’s best interest!
This presentation will use a case study examination to discover why
performance interventions can fail to live up to expectations, and will
offer ideas on how to use the Kirkpatrick “Levels of Evaluation” model
in reverse to perform a more accurate diagnosis and create a more
effective intervention plan. The concepts can help a consultant improve
client satisfaction, and can help an in-house trainer to escape from the
“just a trainer” box and move into the realm of internal performance
improvement consultant and problem-solver.

Facebook, ASTD and You
Are you plugged into all the social networks like Twitter, LinkedIn,
Facebook, etc.?
Things have changed greatly since MySpace was the main social network,
and primarily populated by teenagers.
Don’t overlook the value of Facebook for professional purposes. It is
still used by many for personal and social interactions but its
character is changing.
Currently, there are 400 million active users of Facebook worldwide.
Facebook says this number was reached in February 2010. About a year
prior, (December 2009), the number was 350 millions. Just to put the
growth into perspective, in December 2005, Facebook only had 5.5 million
users.
Of the 400 million Facebookers, one-third are in the United States. If
the user population between ages 25 to 65+ were broken into 10-year
increments, one would see almost the same number in each group. Facebook
is not dominated by high schools by any means.
ASTD has a presence on Facebook. While logged into Facebook, all you
have to do is enter ASTD in the search box at the top of the page. Here
is some of what you will find.
ASTD National has a page. On it are many informative post on topics like
leadership, the workplace, productivity and even social media.
Searching the ASTD Press page gets you to a national site with more
tidbits of relevant information. Clicking on the discussion tab shows a
myriad of job openings nationwide.
Last, but certainly not least, our own ASTD Northern Rockies Chapter has
a fan page. It is a good place, in addition to www.astd-nrc.org, to see
what is going on locally.
Facebook has many uses. If you spend any time on the site, you will see
people also post pictures of their children, grandkids, dogs and any
other image you might image. Some use it to vent, complain, opine or
just ramble. But if used in a professional manner, it is a great tool to
learn things, connect with people, generate business and network.
Try it.
