Welcome to the July 2010
Newsletter!
Lorraine Bosse-Smith will be presenting Leverage Your Time: Get More
Done in Less Time at our August 6th program in Cheyenne. Join us at
LCCC to discover ways to improve your efficiency. Registration is also
now open for our August 19th program - Tech Tools for Today’s Tech-Savvy Learners with
Gina Schreck. Learn how to really engage learners using the latest
technology.
We just had another very nice informal networking breakfast at the Egg &
I on July 8th. We are getting 7-8 people for these, and everyone enjoys
the opportunity just to talk with their friends and colleagues over
breakfast. The cost, including breakfast, is only $10 for members/$15
for non members. Our next one is planned for September 30.
We
also would like to call your attention to the Northern Colorado Human
Resource Association's (NCHRA) fall conference on diversity scheduled
for September 21st. Some of you have heard Ava Diamond speak at our
programs. We have included the full announcement after the President's
Corner.
New members include Stacey Kelso (Integware) in Longmont and Jayme
Parker (Blue Labs Inc) in Loveland. Welcome! We look forward to getting
to know you.
The Midyear Report to Members is included in the President’s Corner. We
are doing well but could use more volunteers. As a volunteer
organization we rely on our members to provide leadership and ongoing
support to the chapter. We need your help with the following
• Staffing our booth at the September 16th Bixpo Conference
(business to business event) at the Embassy suites in Loveland. We are
looking for volunteers for 2 hour blocks from 9.30- 5.00.
• Membership (like greeting new members and contacting lapsed
members)
• Publicity (like sending announcements of our events to
newspapers)
• Social media (like updating our presence on facebook and linkedin)
• Videos. We would like to make some short videos for the web site.
• Meetings (like greeting and registering attendees)
• Programming. We would a few people to help us plan programs for
next year.
• Membership Survey. We would like to do a short membership survey
in October
• Volunteer Coordinator.
Can you help us with any of the above? Please let Dave Vance or any
board member know if you could help out occasionally with any of these
activities. We think you will find it interesting and worthwhile, and it
is a great way to meet people and get involved without a major
commitment or energy or time. Now, if someone would like to make a
greater commitment, we do have some open board positions including VP
for Membership and VP for Communication. We also have several board
member-at-large positions which do not have any formal responsibility
although members-at-large are expected to attend the majority of our
monthly board meetings. (We meet monthly for 1-2 hours either
telephonically or at the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland.) The
existing board would really like some help!

2010 Midyear Report to
Members
The first six months of 2010 have been busy! We are well on our way to
accomplishing all the goals set out in January. Program attendance is
good, and we had a very successful special event in April with Don
Kirkpatrick. Membership is significantly above plan and our financial
condition is good. The membership directory and special “Members Only”
section on the web site are scheduled to go live September 1. Thank you
to all who have joined, attended programs and shared your suggestions.
And a special thank you to the officers and other board members for
their time, energy and dedication. As a volunteer organization, we
cannot succeed without the support of our members, friends and board
members!
Programming: Goals for the year were to sponsor 14 programs,
maintain the excellent attendance achieved last year, achieve a
satisfaction rating of 80%, and publish programs three months in
advance. Through June we have had eight programs (including two
networking events, one in Cheyenne) and eight more are planned for the
remainder of the year including two more networking events and two more
programs in Cheyenne. Program attendance has remained good with 182
participants so far this year (goal is 313 for the year) and average
meeting attendance is the same as last year. Satisfaction with the
programs has averaged 90%, and we are always interested in your
suggestions and feedback. One area for improvement is advance notice of
meetings. We have met our goal of three-month advance notice only twice
this year with the other months representing two months notice. Now that
we have the VP for Programs position filled we look forward to a better
second-half performance.
Membership: Our goals were to add 35 new members (including 18
joint members with national) and retain about 50% of our existing
members which would allow us to hold membership at the December 2009
level of 67. Through June we have added 31 new members, and six have
been joint members. The retention for existing members is 45%, slightly
under plan. At the end of June membership stood at 88, significantly
above plan due to the number of new members in the first half. Joint
membership, however, has not kept pace, and we will need to actively
promote the benefits of national membership in the second half to keep
our percentage of joint members above 35% which is the national
guideline for 2010. Interestingly, our chapter membership compares very
favorably with other regional chapters, many of whom have a much larger
population. The Denver chapter has 125 members, Salt Lake City 112, Las
Vegas 86 and Colorado Springs 45. We have met our goal to welcome all
new members within 30 days and to provide renewal reminders to members
before and after membership expiration.
Technology: Our goal was to refine the web site, make it more
user friendly, add videos, and add a membership directory (resources
permitting). We have continued to refine the web site including
improvements to the pages for joining and renewing. You can also now
find minutes of each month’s board meeting, previous newsletters, and
the annual and midyear reports under the About Us button. We have
reduced the number of clicks to accomplish various tasks and automated
event and renewal notices. In the last two months we have made great
progress in designing a membership directory which is set to go live on
September 1. This has been a goal for the last two years and we are
excited to make it a reality this year. Look for more information later
in the month about its features and about editing your profile. (This
will be a member’s only benefit along with access to the latest job
postings and PowerPoints of previous speakers.) We have not added any
videos yet.
Communication: Goal was to publish a newsletter every month and
remind you of upcoming programs two weeks and 3 days before the event.
We have published every month and we continue to notify you of upcoming
events regularly per plan. We also committed to highlighting national
ASTD events and we have now included these in the newsletter. Our goal
was also to establish a presence on face book and LinkedIn, both of
which have been accomplished.
Outreach and Marketing: Our primary goal was to institutionalize
our partnership with RMC, the Denver-based chapter. We partnered with
the RMC to host the very successful Kirkpatrick event in April at the
Embassy Suites and have cross publicity arrangements in place and
working. We look forward to hosting another major event with them next
year. We continue to send meeting notices to all local papers and we
attended the Business to Business event in Cheyenne in May. We also had
a goal of creating a welcome packet for new members which we have not
done.
Financial: We planned for a loss again this year in anticipation
of investments in our chapter’s future (web site, marketing material and
member directory) and outsourcing of back office functions. Through
June, revenue is above plan due to the April event and expenses are
below plan. Loss for the first six months was about $1,500, less than
planned, and our cash balance remains strong. We also had a goal to keep
our loss on programs to less than $1,000. Year to date we have broken
even on our regular programs and realized a profit of $1,300 on the
Kirkpatrick program which helped offset part of our loss for the first
half.
Board: Our goals for the year were to find new board members,
improve board member attendance, begin to conduct some meetings
telephonically, and hold a midyear board retreat. Recruiting board
members continues to be one of our biggest challenges, but we are very
happy to report finding two new board members who bring lots of
enthusiasm, energy and new ideas. Susan Keehley is our new VP for the
Cheyenne GIG (Geographic Interest Group), and Robbi Muniz is our new VP
for Programs. These are two of our most critical positions and we are
really excited to have them onboard. (We have openings for officer
positions and members at large as well as for volunteers. Please let me
know if you are interested!!) We have averaged six members in attendance
for our monthly board meetings which is our goal, and we have held three
meetings telephonically so far this year. Our midyear retreat will be
held July 8.
